Computer & Internet Classes in our Computer Centre

We have been providing computer training to the community for the past 5 years. Initially we started providing training in a small computer centre that we established with funding provided by the Community Relations Commission. Afterwards we secure funding to continue the program with Senior Telstra.
Due to the great demand from the community for computer and Internet training SLASA has decided to establish a brand new computer centre.
The programme is offered in two levels:
Beginners: Designed for persons with no previous computer skills or that have never used a computer but are interested in learning.
Intermediate: Designed for persons with basic computer skills and want to learn how to use the internet. This class teaches how to access web pages.
The programme duration is of 12 hours across 4 weeks at a cost of $20, which includes:
- Training manual
- Training
- Internet access (5 additional hours after programme completion during 4 weeks)

Spanish Support Group for Carers
This group was established at Fairfield Central Office and is a partnership between NSW SLASA and Transcultural Mental Health Centre (TMHC)
This group provides support to carers of people with mental health problems, such as, depression, anxiety, learning difficulties, Alzheimer, schizophrenia, and other psychological and emotional problems.
Why does this group exist?
- Because taking care of someone with mental or psycological problem imposes severe burdens on the carers’ lives and their family.
- Caring for someone with mental illness is often a new experience, therefore carers do not know what to do or where to seek help.
- Carers may not speak English and know what their rights and responsibilities are.
- Sometimes carers feel guilty and responsible for their loved one’s mental problem.
- Many carers, once they begin the caring role, fail to address their own needs.
- When carers receive adequate support they can cope and care better, without feeling lonely in the process.
What are our aim and objectives?
- To ease the burden of care among families and carers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds by:
- Providing culturally and linguistically appropriate support groups for carers of people with a mental or psychological problem,
- Promoting mental health awareness and education among carers and their communities to reduce stigma,
- Ensuring that carers’ needs and concerns are being addressed or referred to appropriate services,
- Promoting self carer and well being among carers,
- Working in partnership with relevant mental health services and carer organisations to ensure service delivery to carers and their families.
Time:
The group meets the third Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m to 13:00 pm. at NSW SLASA’s Central Office. (33 Dale St. Fairfield. NSW 2165) . The facilitator for this group is Blanca Arely Espinoza.

The Youth Camp

The Youth Camp program began in 1986 when a group of Spanish speaking workers, in conjunction with Rivendell Adolescent Unit, set up access for young people from our communities to week-long camps on the Unit's grounds.
Initially focusing on assisting refugee young people from Latin American countries who were resettling in Sydney, the program has developed to target a broader range of Spanish-speaking young people, including those born here to Spanish-speaking parents.
The camps were and are still held at the Rivendell Adolescent Unit. This program allows young people to gain many new social skills as well as new friends.
This program has been improving, both in quality and in reputation within the wider youth welfare sector. Both the number of young people interested in participating, and the number of volunteers interested in working, is greater than the number we have room to take. Follow up activities have included picnics, and video afternoons, which have been greatly enjoyed.
