Open Day, New Office in Waterloo- City of Sydney
NEW SERVICES FOR THE SPANISH SPEAKING COMMUNITY IN WATERLOO!
On Thursday 02 September 2010, community members and colleagues from the community sector, government and no-non government services joined us to celebrate the opening of our new service in the inner Sydney area at Waterloo (NSW Ethnic Communities Council building). The occasion was a perfect networking opportunity where NSW SLASA staff , volunteers and representatives from more than 35 Organisations learned more about services available to the community in the City of Sydney area and opportunities to work together were discussed.
The open day was a really special; attendees enjoyed a tasty Latin-American light lunch while listening to the great musician Antonio Gomez performing Latin-American tunes.
NSW SLASA decided to open this office to support our increasing Spanish Speaking Community due the high number of new arrivals from Spanish Speaking countries settling here.
It has been really satisfying to see the great response of the community to this new service. New arrivals are day by day seeking assistance at the waterloo office as well as members from our community who have been here for long time but it has not been easy. There have been a lot of challenges that the waterloo team had to face in order to maximise our resources and support our community in an effective way.
Launch of our new booklets “medimate” y “Cultural Briefing Kit,” developed under the program for elderly people.
The cultural briefing kit has been finalised and the official launch of the resource was held at Cabra-Vale Digger Club on the 18th of August 2010. The launch was a success; we had 89 attendees from Spanish speaking leaders to Aged Care service providers. The cultural briefing kit is the profile of the Spanish Speaking communities and it has been developed as a resource tool to support staff in the aged care service sector to provide for the cultural and linguistic needs for their Spanish speaking clients. The booklet contains information on key topic areas such as migration history, family life, religion, language, and attitudes towards aged care services, attitudes towards illness and death and general history.
The information contained in the booklet includes many generalisations about the Spanish speaking communities as distinct from current Spanish speaking cultures. The booklet is intended to be of general guidance only. Therefore, it is important to understand that not every individual from Spanish speaking communities will necessarily reflect these descriptions. Each individual will have different points of view, history, experiences and idiosyncrasies.
AFRO LATINO FESTIVAL 2010
CELEBRATING OUR COMMON CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Afro-Latino Festival 2010 was a major success due to the generous sponsorship by the Community Relations Commission of NSW.
The Festival was held on Saturday 29th May at Fairfield High School and was supported by Fairfield Police, Fairfield Migrant Resource Centre, City Care, Burundian Community Care, Fairfield City Council and the Congolese Community of Australia. Panavision Asia, Dante Rivera and the CuriousWorks Crew showed their kind support through the documentation and promotion of the Festival.
As a result of the overwhelming success of Afro Latino Festival 2010, the advisory committee, both Latin American and African communities and other parties have expressed the need to make the Afro-Latino Festival an annual event. The Festival’s concept brings together both African and Latin American communities to celebrate a common heritage, rich in cultural and artistic expressions, thereby providing an endless platform to express and share this with the wider Australian community, as well as developing and increasing community participation, cultural awareness and knowledge.

Floriade is a flower and entertainment festival held annually in Canberra's Commonwealth Park featuring extensive displays of flowering bulbs with integrated sculptures and other artistic features. The festival attracts tourists from around Australia and overseas in spring from mid September to mid October each year, and is considered the most important regular event for tourism in the Australian Capital Territory. It is also called "Australia's Celebration of Spring". After some controversy regarding an entry charge, admission to Floriade has been free for a number of years.
