This space is designed with the aim of providing support and information to the Hispanic-speaking community, for mental health issues, so that people learn, be sensitized, and seek help. Problems related to mental health are unquestionably ones that are becoming more important in worldwide public health. Mental health problems and its lack of information, have severe individual, social and economic implications, affecting not only the welfare and quality of life of the person but also family, community and society in general. For this reason it is vitally important to report on mental health and its importance, and sensitize the Hispanic community to seek help, using social and community resources. A recent survey done by the American Psychiatric Association revealed that 2 of every 5 Spanish speakers do not have enough information and knowledge required about mental illness. The consequences of lack of information are set up as a major risk factor for public health. Specifically those who suffer from mental illness and do not begin the treatment in time because a lack of information, by the moment the symptoms appear, these mental illnesses pass from an acute illness to a chronic one, worsening the patient prognosis. For example, in the case of a depression if the uninformed patient is not treated early, the disease could become chronic, and even it could lead the person to commit suicide. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), mental illnesses account for 13% of disabilities and most of them are not diagnosed properly or are ignored. In this scenario is vital to learn, understand and raise awareness of various mental disorders and their symptoms in order to seek professional help. Health is not just the absence of disease. The WHO Constitution defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social" and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Mental health is a concept that refers to the person’s emotional and psychological welfare. Merriam-Webster defines mental health as "state of emotional and psychological well-being in which people can use their cognitive and emotional capabilities to work within society, and meet the demands of everyday life." In this scenario, a person who is mentally healthy has an emotional and psychological well-being allowing them to live and coexist with others in harmony, respecting social norms, working and developing their full potential, generating a contribution to society. Thus, we see the importance of being an active agent and promoter of our health, informing, learning, identifying symptoms and seeking help.
