Engaging Diversity Fairfield Multicultural Festival November 2010
INTRODUCTION
Engaging Diversity Project
As part of the 2010 Diverse Australia Program, the NSW Spanish and Latin American Association for Social Assistance (SLASA) will run the project ‘Engaging Diversity’ in the Fairfield City area. This is a community based project to address social inclusion in this highly diverse community.
‘Engaging Diversity’ is a Community Grant project administered by the NSW Spanish and Latin American Association for Social Assistance Inc and supported by the Assyrian Resource Centre, Bidwill and Fairfield High Schools, Fairfield City Council, the NSW Police Force, the Powerhouse Youth Theatre and Western Sydney Dance Action.
This project is proudly supported by the Australian Government’s Diverse Australia Program, administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
The Diverse Australia Program aims to address issues of cultural, racial and religious intolerance by promoting respect, fairness, inclusion and a sense of belonging for everyone.
For more information on the Diverse Australia Program, visit www.harmony.gov.au
NSW Spanish and Latin American Association for Social Assistance
NSW Spanish and Latin American Association for Social Assistance is a community not-for-profit association which acts on behalf of the different Spanish and Latin American Communities in NSW. Our objectives include aiding immigrants and refugees to settle in Australia.
NSW SLASA also has the responsibility to identify the needs of the community and present them to different Government Departments and aim to develop strategies and establish projects that help improve the welfare of the Spanish and Latin- American communities in NSW.
In recent times, NSW SLASA began looking towards a better future, not only for the Spanish Speaking communities but for our neighbouring communities in NSW. We maintained the vision that together we could celebrate the diversity of the Australian multicultural climate and strive to overcome the challenges that our difference create. We also look to support new emerging communities and particularly support to the recently arrived African communities. We recognise our close connection with the African communities and its strong influence on Latin-American culture, music and dance.
Last year, we ran a youth based project to address tensions in our highly diverse community. We ran education activities as well as three large events; an intergenerational forum, a youth music and art expo and a multicultural youth conference.
In November 2009, NSW SLASA in partnership with Fairfield City Council held the first Fairfield youth conference held in Club Marconi. This event was made possible due to the great generosity of the club in providing three venue spaces on the day.
In May 2010, NSW SLASA will host it’s first AFRO-LATINO festival at Fairfield High School. The event will aim to bring together African and Latin American communities and being building a relationship with the newly arrived African refugees.
As part of the ‘Engaging Diversity’ Program, NSW SLASA will run a Multicultural Festival to promote a fair, respectful, socially inclusive and multicultural community for Fairfield LGA.
